‘मैला आँचल’ हिन्दी का श्रेष्ठ और सशक्त आंचलिक उपन्यास है। नेपाल की सीमा से सटे उत्तर-पूर्वी बिहार के एक पिछड़े ग्रामीण अंचल को पृष्ठभूमि बनाकर रेणु ने इसमें वहाँ के जीवन का, जिससे वह स्वयं भी घनिष्ठ रूप से जुड़े हुए थे, अत्यन्त जीवन्त और मुखर चित्रण किया है।
‘मैला आँचल का कथानायक’ एक युवा डॉक्टर है जो अपनी शिक्षा पूरी करने के बाद एक पिछड़े गाँव को अपने कार्य-क्षेत्र के रूप में चुनता है, तथा इसी क्रम में ग्रामीण जीवन के पिछड़ेपन, दु:ख-दैन्य, अभाव, अज्ञान, अन्धविश्वास के साथ-साथ तरह-तरह के सामाजिक शोषण-चक्र में फँसी हुई जनता की पीड़ाओं और संघर्षों से भी उसका साक्षात्कार होता है। कथा का अन्त इस आशामय संकेत के साथ होता है कि युगों से सोई हुई ग्राम-चेतना तेज़ी से जाग रही है।
कथाशिल्पी फणीश्वरनाथ रेणु की इस युगान्तरकारी औपन्यासिक कृति में कथाशिल्प के साथ-साथ भाषा और शैली का विलक्षण सामंजस्य है जो जितना सहज-स्वाभाविक है, उतना ही प्रभावकारी और मोहक भी। ग्रामीण अंचल की ध्वनियों और धूसर लैंडस्केप्स से सम्पन्न यह उपन्यास हिन्दी कथा-जगत में पिछले कई दशकों से एक क्लासिक रचना के रूप में स्थापित है।

“Seeing through the euphoria of the early years of Indian independence, Phanishwar Nath ‘Renu’ came out with his Maila Anchal. (Translated into English as Soiled Border by Indira Junghare.) While the others celebrated, ‘Renu’ mourned the betrayal of the ideals that had animated the freedom struggle. He had the eye and the sensitivity to see that free India was already soiled. He presaged the widespread disenchantment that would in the course of the following decades overtake the country. I would rather have something of that eye and that sensitivity.”↗
